Palais de l’Isle and the Thiou
Set in the middle of the Thiou like the prow of a stone ship, the Palais de l’Isle is Annecy’s most photographed image. A former court and gaol, it is open to visit and tells the city’s story. Around it, flowery quays and small bridges invite you to wander. Sitting on a terrace by the water, listening to the ripple and talking for hours is a simple pleasure.
Old town and Rue Sainte-Claire
Rue Sainte-Claire lines up its arcades and pastel facades, enlivened by craft shops, cheese cellars and discreet cafés. Nearby, the Perrière Bridge and Rue Royale complete the postcard. Twice a week, the Old Annecy market sets up under these same arcades: Savoyard, fragrant, perfect for an unplanned foodie date.
Annecy Castle and views over the town
Climbing the cobbled lanes up to Annecy Castle, former home of the counts of Geneva, offers both a lively museum and a splendid view over the rooftops and the lake. On the way back, a drink in one of the old centre’s cocktail cellars draws the evening out. On Lyad, members from Annecy share their fondue favourites and best walks; it is up to you to find someone to try them with.
